2 Soldiers dead as Army kills 53 Boko Haram terrorists

The gallant troops of Operation Lafiya Dole have neutralized 53 insurgents of the Boko Haram terrorist group in a fierce battle that occured in Garin Maloma on the fringes of Sambisa Forest in Borno State.

The encounter, which spanned through a week, included the counter attack in Monguno, where jet fighters killed scores of the terrorists, and lost two soldiers in the process.

The subsidiary operation which was tagged “Long Reach”, according to Military authorities, started when the gallant troops executed several aggressive clearance operation at various locations within the theatre, including a counter attack on the terrorists that were planning an invasion on Monguno community.

The Military authorities added that large cache of arms, ammunition and equipments were recovered from the terrorists during the encounter and about 33 captives were freed by the troops.

The military disclosed further that the terrorists were struck by the Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation Lafiya Dole, who destroyed a compound housing some high-value Boko Haram Terrorist (BHT) leaders and neutralised some of their fighters at Garin Maloma, outside the borders of the Sambisa forest in Borno State.

“The attack at Garin Maloma, a major node in the BHT’s line of communication in the Sambisa Forest axis, was undertaken based on credible intelligence reports as well as days of surveillance missions indicating that the terrorists had begun using one of the compounds in the settlement for accommodation and training of their fighters.

“Accordingly, the ATF dispatched an Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft and fighter jets to attack the location. Overhead the target area, many BHT fighters were observed in the vicinity of settlement, with a few around the solar panel-mounted, High Value Target (HVT) location”, it said.
