Police go tough on crimes; set up new Special unit to tackle armed robbery, kidnappings

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu, in an attempt to continuously clamp down on the activities of armed robbers, kidnappers, cultists, and all form of criminal elements in the state has employed a new policing strategy and ideas into the security architecture of Lagos State.

CRIMECHANNELS gathered that the Commissioner has established an ICT/Tracking unit at the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti in the Yaba area of Lagos. According to the CP, the new unit headed by a Computer Scientist named Kasumu Rilwan will adopt both scientific and forensic approach in assisting the Lagos State Command to unravel crimes and other ill social vices.

The information was made know in a Police Press Release , dated June 25, 2021 and signed by the Lagos State Command Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

According to Adejobi, the Commissioner created 2 new squads to complement the existing departments and units of the Lagos State Command in combating crimes in the State. He gave the new squads as; the Special Squad and the Strike Squad.

Part of the statement reads, “In addition, CP Hakeem Odumosu, in the last three months, has organized combat training, musketry, Baton and Rifle Exercise, martial arts and range practice for officers and men of the command, across board, with a view to improving on their capabilities, command’s anti crime strategies and services delivery in line with the 12 point agenda of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba.”

“Equally, the formation of Anti Traffic Robbery Squad and the strategic deployment of the newly delivered equipment by the Lagos State Government to the Lagos State Police Command, is a spirited effort to rejig the command’s action plans in tackling insecurity, especially robbery in traffic, gangsterism and hooliganism and taking charge of the public space towards effective policing of the state.”

He disclosed that the Command arrested 2 suspected armed robbers at Zone C1, Gberigbe, Imota, Ikorodu, Lagos State, on June 22, at about 1am.

He said that Policemen attached to Imota Division of the Command responded to a distress call from residents of Zone C1, Gberigbe, Ikorodu, that some armed robbers invaded their community and attacked some residents. He said that the Police arrived the scene swiftly and apprehended the 2 robbers before they cause more trouble.

He gave the suspects names as; Abdulfatai Abiola, and Quadri Adeniyi, both are Mushin Olosa, Lagos.

He said that the Police recovered a cutlass, 43 inches plasma TV, One Itel Phone, One Hauwei Phone and assorted charms from the suspects upon arrest.

In another similar case, Police operatives attached to Ojo Division on June 23, arrested 2 suspected armed robbers. The robbers identified as Usman Musa and Lasibi Jubril.

He said they were arrested at the Iyana Iba area of Lagos state. He said they were caught robbing one Alli Ibrahim, a resident of Ara Junction in Egbeda, Lagos.

Meanwhile, CP Hakeem has ordered the suspects to be transferred to the Lagos State Command’s Special Squad for thorough investigation and possible prosecution.

He also assured the people of Lagos of their safety, he urged Lagosians to report any suspicious activity by any group of persons or individual to the nearest Police formation.
