67-year-old Man attempts suicide by jumping into Lagos Lagoon on his birthday
Security operatives recently prevented a 67-year-old man, Oluwatoye Bamgboye, from jumping into the lagoon on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos in an apparent suicidal mission.
The man was said to have left his home in the Oju Ore area of Ota in Ogun State on his birthday and headed for the Lagoon where he was held by the security operatives before committing suicide.
The The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the state police command made this known on its verified Facebook page on Tuesday.
It said:“Officials of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) on patrol of 3rd Mainland Bridge this afternoon stopped a 67-year-old man from leaping into the Lagoon on his birthday.
“The elderly man, who gave his name as Oluwatoye Bamgboye, from Oju-Ore, Ogun State, was attempting to jump into the Lagos Lagoon inward Lagos Island when the officers stopped him.”
“He disclosed that a personal challenge made him sell his house, land and car, which didn’t solve the problem. He said he got a loan and the problem still persisted.”
According to the RRS, the man further explained that he secured a job and but eventually lost it on his resumption date when he was told that the job had been given to someone else.
In his sorrow-laden comment before the RRS, the man reportedly said: “Today being my birthday, I have decided to end it all. The burden and the frustration are too much for me to bear. My wife has abandoned me in the process.”
The RRS stated that he has been conveyed to Adekunle Police Station where efforts are in progress to contact his family members.
