BREAKING; Baba Ijesha to remain in prison as court rejects his bail application

A Magistrate Court sitting in Lagos State has denied Baba Ijesha, the embattled Nollywood Actor bail in the ongoing trial over alleged sexual assault of a 14 years old female.

It could be recalled that Baba Ijesha whose real name is Olaweranju James was apprehended on April 23, 2021, on the grounds of molesting a female child who at the time was only 14 years old.

On May 17, the accused Actor was however granted bail, but due to the fact that he could not meet the conditions of the bail, he was locked behind bars, even after spending 25 days in jail.

At his trial on Wednesday, June 16, his counsel, Kayode Olabiran, prayed the court to grant his client freedom, on the grounds of his deteriorating health.

But in his ruling, the Judge, P. E Nwaka, denied the accused bail, according to him, the Court can not grant the accused bail because the matter is beyond its jurisdiction. He said that the matter has already been filed before the High Court.

Council to Baba Ijesha, Kayode also lamented the controversial nature of the case. He said that the case which was first trailed on Social media made it difficult for his client to get bail.

Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Police in charge of the case, Yetunde Cardoso stressed that the matter is now beyond the Police due to the fact that the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) of Lagos State Ministry of Justice has taken over the matter.

She said, “Mr Olanrewaju was actually granted bail during the JUSUN strike and based on the conditions given, he couldn’t meet them and he was properly charged today (Wednesday).”

“Just like the court stated, the case has already been filed before the high court and the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) of Lagos State Ministry of Justice has taken over the matter from the police.”

“So presently, we have handed over to the DPP so the case is before them (DPP). It has nothing to do with the police anymore, it’s now left for the DPP to handle it, “she said.
