Communal clash: Governor imposes curfew, orders Police, Military deployment

The Governor of Osun State, Adegboyega Oyetola has ordered the deployment of police in Ilobu and Erin Osun communities for restoration of peace in the area.

Report says that two individuals, Azeez Adamu and Abdullahi Tairu were shot following a clash on Saturday between the communities over a boundary.

The Governor’s directives was contained in a press release titled ‘Oyetola appeals for calm …Orders Police to restore law, order ….Wants Army to support Police’s effort.”

The statement by Oyetola’s Chief Press Secretary, Ismail Omipidan, also quoted the governor as pleading with the warring groups in Irepodun Local Government Area of the State to sheath their sword and give peace a chance.


Oyetola was said to have given the order during a marathon meeting with heads of security agencies in the State on Sunday morning, where the situation in Ilobu and Erin-Osun was critically examined.

He explained that the immediate deployment of armed policemen with support from the army is for restoration of law and order in troubled areas.

The statement read, “As a government, we are resolved to do everything possible to protect citizens from actual and potential threats. To this end, we have ordered the immediate deployment of security operatives to restore law and order.

“I want to appeal to our people not to destroy our collective heritage by taking laws into their own hands. Two wrongs don’t make a right. I, therefore, appeal to the warring parties to sheath their sword and allow peace to reign.” he concluded.

Meanwhile, State Government has declared a 24-hour curfew in Irepodun and Orolu Local Government Areas of the State, following the violence that broke out between Ilobu and Erin-Osun communities.

The Secretary to the State Government, Prince Wole Oyebamiji said the declaration of curfew became necessary to douse tension in the troubled area and that the curfew would subsist until further notice.
