JUST IN; Police officer allegedly killed by suspected gunmen

Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers have killed 2 persons in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State. According to sources, it was learnt that the slain persons were a Police officer and a Driver attached to an expatriate.

The incident, it was gathered occured on Friday, May 21, along the busy Mission Hill road, which serves as major entry and exit route into Umuahia.

While the details of the incident remain sketchy, multiple sources claimed that the suspected armed robbers trailed the expatriate from one of the commercial banks in Umuahia town, where he had reportedly gone to withdraw some money.

It was learnt that the robbers closed in on the car and fired some shots causing the vehicle the foreigner was in to stop. Upon stopping, the Police officer came out and engaged them, however, he was shot dead by the armed men. The Driver was also killed during the shoot out, it was said that he made a move to start the car in a attempt to flee the scene.

According to the sources, the expatriate survived the attack, as he hid himself away from the robbers.


The gunshots it was gathered caused panic in the area, as many residents and shop owners, including banks closed their doors and windows, while many motorists stopped their cars and left it on the road.

A resident of the area said still shocked from what happened said, “We started hearing sporadic gunshots renting the air. Police was shooting. They said unknown gunmen have entered Umuahia.”

“There was panic mood. People were forced to hurriedly closed shops. Banks and other institutions closed their offices in apparent move to safeguard their premises.”

“It is funny telling the story now, but it wasn’t funny as many may still be struggling to recover from the shock.”

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Police Command, Geoffrey Ogbonna, confirmed the incident to Journalists. He said that the armed robbers killed 2 persons, a Police officer attached to the expatriate and the Driver. He said that the corpses has been evacuated and deposited in a mortuary.
