JUST IN; Bill for creation of Tiga State lands in Senate, passes first reading

Senator Kawu Suleiman Abdurrahman of Kano South has presented a bill in the Senate proposing the creation of ‘Tiga State’ from Kano State.

The bill, titled “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Creation of Tiga State Bill, 2024 (SB.523)”, underwent its First Reading on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.

This move follows similar legislative efforts, including the proposal for Anioma State by Delta North Senator Ned Nwoko, aimed at ensuring parity among geopolitical zones with six states. Additionally, bills for the creation of Orlu State, backed by Senator Osita Izunaso and House of Representatives member Ikenga Ugochineyere, as well as Etiti State sponsored by Amobi Godwin Ogah of Abia State’s Isikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency, and others representing affected communities, are currently under consideration.

Numerous lawmakers are advocating for the establishment of additional states in Lagos and other states across Nigeria.
