Lagos inaugurates community Policing advisory committees

In a bid to improve security in the state and for swift response to issues that occur in communities, the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-olu has inaugurated the State Community Policing Advisory Committee (SCPAC) and its operations arm, the State Community Policing Committee (SCPC).

The Governor, who inaugurated the members of the committee himself on Wednesday, added that the essence of community policing is key to securing the community as proposed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr Muhammed Adamu.

The failure of the current policing model, which has failed to engage members of the communities and neighborhoods in knowledge sharing and intelligence gathering, is another reason why the creation of the community policing is important.

SCPAC, which is co-chaired by the Commissioner of Police, Mr Hakeem Odumosu, and Chairman of Council of Obas and Chiefs in Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, would be the custodian of the initiative and it is to maintain highest level of oversight on community policing in the state.

He also added that they will be responsible for managing and coordinating the state-level operations of the community policing programme.

Meanwhile, he disclosed as well that the initiative was conceived and rolled out in order to make a change in the way security issues in the communities are attended to.
