Military officer, one other shot dead as unknown gunmen attack Security checkpoint

An operative of the Nigeria Army identified as Corporal Sunday, on Sunday, July 17, was shot dead in a fierce gun battle with some unidentified gunmen.

CRIMECHANNELS gathered that the incident occurred when some gunmen suspected to be sea pirates attacked a military Joint Task Force, JTF, checkpoint at Tuomo community in Burutu local government area of Delta state.

One of the gunmen was said to have died as he was shot by the gun blazing team of security operatives at the checkpoint area.

Narrating what transpired to newsmen, a former CDC Chairman of Tuomo community, Mr Akpoebiede Defence, said that the gunmen came in a speedboat at about 11:00 pm on Sunday. He alleged that they came to steal some guns belonging to the Military personnel.

He said, “They wanted to land at the military checkpoint at the waterfront when one of the men on duty asked to know their identity, who said they were returning from work.”

“The Soldier told them not to land at their spot and in the process the gunmen opened fire and shot a soldier dead instantly.”

“A gun battle ensued with the soldiers also killing one assailant on the spot while others sped off with bullet wounds, leaving their dead. As I’m talking to you, the lifeless body of the assailant is still at Tuomo waterfront”.

Reacting to the death of the Military operative, the Chairman of Burutu council area, Mr Godknows Angela, sympathized with the Army for the loss of one of their gallant Soldiers. He also commended the security operatives for successfully repelling the attack, advising them to still be on alert.
