Mother arrested by Police allegedly over ‘murder’ of her one day-old Baby

Gombe State Police command yesterday confirmed the arrest of the mother of a-day old baby who was thrown from a height to death early yesterday.

The infant was murdered at the female hostel of Gombe State University, GSU Gombe.

Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, ASP Mahid Mua’zu who spoke with The Nation on the phone, said the command officially received a complaint from GSU security around 1pm yesterday about the incident.

“We received a complaint today (Sunday) via the Chief Security Officer, CSO of the GSU who reported around 1:30pm that the incident happened at the university jurisdiction. We have taken over investigation presently and we are going to communicate after gathering our facts in due course,” he said.

He said the day old baby had been certified dead on arrival while the suspect, the newborn’s mother simply identified as Rahab, a part four Public Administration student, was currently receiving treatment at Federal Teaching Hospital, FTH Gombe.

The University was thrown into panic on Saturday morning following the discovery of the body of a day-old baby near hall four, female hostel.

The baby was found dead with an umbilical cord and injury sustained by his right leg.

The university authority was yet to make any official pronouncement on the incident but a source said the murder of the day-old was considered a grave criminal act which could not be overlooked.
