Nigerians can have heart attack, I’m having fun – Emefiele speaks on Presidential ambition
Governor Godwin Emefiele of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says the whole commotion around his 2023 aspiration is amusing to him.
After a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, Emefiele stated this in response to questioning from State House media.
When asked about his reaction to reports that the President had asked him to quit following the purchase of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)’ presidential nomination and expression of interest forms, he said: “There is no news now, but there will be news. You heard me, I said there is no news but there will be news.”
However when he was told that Nigerians were anxious about his position, he responded,: “Let them have heart attack. It’s good to have heart attack. I am having a lot of fun.”
Since expression of interest and nomination forms of the ruling APC were picked on his behalf, the governor of the apex bank has been under intense pressure with many calling for him to step down.
Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has asked Buhari to remove Emefiele if he refused to step aside, calling his interest in the presidency in 2023 “a joke taken too far.”
However, Emefiele declined the presidential forms purchased for him in a series of tweets following the development, claiming he would purchase them with his own money if he is interested in the presidential race.
He claimed that God would decide for him in the next few days.
