Three officials of Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Abia State branch have been arrested by the police at at a meeting in Umuahia.

Report says the meeting which was held with affiliate unions was to discuss the union stand on the planned N340 hike in the price of petrol.

This was in line with the National Union leadership directive that all state branches of the union should meet over their proposed rally against the planned N340 hike in the price of petrol.

Recall that the NLC in the state had been enmeshed in a legal battle between Comrades Eze Idima and Uchenna Obigwe over who is the authentic chairman of the union in the state.

The meeting which was in progress was stopped abruptly as police invaded the venue arresting some NLC and members of the affiliate unions.

Some officials were able to escape arrest while some were taken away by the police. Those who were taken away include: State President of NULGE, Comrade Ikechi Nwaigwe; the chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council and the Desk officer of the NLC in the state.

An official of one of the affiliate unions said; “Comrade Uchenna Obigwe petitioned the Police who invaded the meeting to arrest Comrade Eze Idima, but when the Police did not see Comrade Eze Idima, they arrested some of the NLC officials at the meeting. Some of them were released at the venue, but the State President of NULGE and two other NLC officials were taken away. The matter has nothing to do with the NULGE or any other affiliate union. It is part of the NLC leadership battle between Comrade Uchenna Obigwe and Comrade Eze Idima.”

Speaking on the incident, Comrade Ikechi Nwaigwe who is Abia State President of NULGE, told Journalist that his union has nothing to do with the matter.

“The matter is the leadership challenge between Obigwe and Idima, in which Obigwe is challenging the national leadership of NLC. Comrade Uchenna Obigwe, who felt that the general Secretary of NLC Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja would be there in the meeting as earlier speculated made a petitioned the CP, then the state police but when they did not see Emmanuel Ugboaja and Eze Idima, I, the NULGE president, became their next alternative.” he said

SP Geoffrey Ogbonna who is the Spokesman of Abia State Police Command, when contacted said he is not aware of the arrest of the officials.
