Police to the rescue as hoodlums flog protesting pensioners at govt house

Pensioners were flogged and assaulted in Imo State on Tuesday by some hoodlums at State Government House in Owerri, the state capital while protesting for their five months unpaid pensions and gratuities.

CRIMECHANNELS gathered that the pensioners, stormed the State Government House in Owerri, to protest over non-payment of their pensions.

It was reported that some groups of hoodlums with canes formed a barricade, avoiding the pensioners from accessing the Government House’s main entrance.

According to reports, the protest was the fifth in less than a month by the senior citizens who decried over nonpayment of pensions.

While the attack with canes by the thugs was still on, the retirees reportedly continued to shout and blast the state Government as Police operatives led by an Assistant Commissioner of police, AJ Moses, arrived at the scene.

It was gathered that Police operatives sent the thugs away and urged the pensioners to withdraw the protest.

According to the police chief, AJ Moses, he told the retirees to work with the appropriate organs of the government, they, however, responded that they had exhausted all avenues of reconciliation with the Government.

According to the protesters, the Governor Hope Uzodinma’s led administration was being insensitive to their cries.

“Thugs were flogging us anyhow, their fathers and mothes. I pity them because they have dug their graves. At Warehouse junction, why we were coming, they accosted us and were pouring water on us. This has never happened in this state before,” Ibekwe, protestant told newsmen.

He added, “The monies we worked for and the government is sending urchins, idiots and never do wells to assault people who are old enough to be their fathers, mothers, and grandparents.
