Four persons have been killed in Yelewta community, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State on Saturday.
According to reports, CRIMECHANNELS gathered that 3 of the victims were shot dead by armed herdsmen on Saturday morning, while the fourth person was killed by a stray bullet fired from the gun of a security operative.
It was learnt that after the killings, members of the community gathered in large number, and marched to Lafia in an attempt to protest the death of their own, however, security operatives came to the protest ground and dispersed them.
A Police officer, it was learnt accidently fired his gun which resulted in the death of the unidentified victim.
Confirming the incident to Journalist, the Chairman of Guma LGA, Caleb Aba, said that the youths were angry, causing them to block the highway to protest the killing of the 3 persons who were only teenagers.
He disclosed that they had gone to cultivate their farmland when the tragic incident occurred.
He explained that the development led to the intervention of security agencies including the Police, Soldiers of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) and traditional rulers at the scene as they tried to calm the protesters to unblock the road.
He said, “Sadly in an attempt to disperse the angry youth who were resisting, there was a shot by the security agencies and unfortunately, one of the protesters was hit by a bullet and killed.”
Meanwhile, he noted that the corpses of the victims have been deposited in a mortuary.
He said that normalcy has returned to Yelewta community, adding that the people are going about their lawful businesses.
