S3xual abuse suspect on trial flees, runs out of the country
Isreal Effiong, a sexual abuse defendant on trial in Esit Eket Local Government Area for allegedly sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl, has fled to Cameroon.
However, while ruling on the prosecuting State Counsel’s plea for the court to cancel the accused person’s bail, the trial judge, Justice Pius Idiong, directed the police to arrest the suspect in Cameroun until the case was resolved by the court.
The accused, a father of two children from Afaha Ekpene Edi in Esit Eket, had pleaded not guilty to the charge and had been given N400,000 bail.
On January 18, 2022, he allegedly skipped bail, prompting the trial judge to order his father, Samuel Effiong, to be arrested as his surety.
The State Counsel also asked the court to order the accused’s father to show cause why the bond should not be forfeited.
The father testified in court that he had been pleading with his son to return home since he left for Cameroon, but that his son vowed to rather die in Cameroon than return to Nigeria to face the charge.
The Administrative Judge, Eket Judicial Division of the High Court of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Pius ruled that although the surety had forfeited the N400,000 bond, it did not relieve his son of his liability to stand trial for the offense of rape, which he was arraigned in for in court.
