School Proprietor, accomplice sentenced to death over Hanifa’s murder

Abdulmalik Tanko, the proprietor of a school in Audu Bako, has been sentenced to death by hanging by a Kano State High Court presided over by Justice Usman Na’abba for the kidnapping and killing of five-year-old Hanifa Abubakar.

His accomplice, Isyaku Hashim, was also sentenced to death by hanging for concealment and kidnapping of the five-year-old.

Fatima Jibril, the third defendant, was sentenced to two years in prison for conspiracy and attempt.

Justice Na’abba began by reading the case details from the date of arraignment until the final court sitting when he set the date for judgement.

At exactly 2:25pm, he pronounced his judgement as follows:

“The first defendant (Tanko) is hereby sentenced to death by hanging and additional 5 years for criminal conspiracy.

“The second defendant (Hashim) is hereby sentenced to death by hanging and two years for conspiracy and another three years for attempt to kidnap.

“The third defendant (Fatima Musa), being a mother, has been sentenced to one year for attempt and one year for conspiracy.”

The trio of Abdulmalik, Hashim, and Musa were arraigned before the Kano State High Court on a five-count charge of criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, confinement, and culpable homicide in violation of sections 97, 274, 277, and 221 of the penal code.

They were arraigned on February 7, but the court adjourned due to the accused persons’ lack of legal representation, and they were rearraigned on March 2.

M.A Lawan, Kano State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, led the prosecution team, while Barrister Asiya Muhammad Imam of the Legal Aid Council led the defense team.

The prosecution, led by Lamido Abba Soron Dinki, urged the court to consider the totality of the evidence tendered before it to find the defendants guilty of the charges leveled against them and sentence them to death at a resumed hearing while adopting the final written addresses by all parties.

Hanifa was abducted on her way home from Islamiyya School on December 4, 2021, and was later discovered to have been murdered.

Tanko previously confessed to kidnapping the victim and killing her with N100 rat poison before burying her in a shallow grave in one of his schools. He later changed his story, admitting only to kidnapping her.
