Shootings, one person injured as mob attack Police officers on duty

An unidentified man was shot on Wednesday after a mob attacked two police officers at a company in Ibeju-Lekki to protest the arrest of a suspected criminal.

A team of police officers from the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone Two, Onikan, were said to have apprehended the suspect.

However, it was learned that youths in the area who objected to his arrest mobilized to rescue him but did not see the police team or suspect when they arrived at his residence.

The mob was said to have seen two armed policemen guarding a company on their way back and decided to vent their rage on them.

According to Lagos police spokesman SP Benjamin Hundeyin, a mob of over 200 people pelted stones on the policemen and destroyed a Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) parked within the company.

“When it became apparent that the mob was hell-bent on lynching the policemen, the policemen justifiably used their firearm. One of the attackers was hit and is responding to treatment at the hospital.

“The policemen were able to protect themselves and prevented further wanton destruction. Normalcy has returned to the area. An investigation has commenced to arrest other fleeing attackers, after which they will be prosecuted,” Hundeyinn tweeted.
