Six persons have been reportedly killed and many injured in a clash between suspected cultists and members of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) in Owo, Owo local government area of Ondo State.
CRIMECHANNELS learnt that during the violent clash, several houses and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed by the cult members.
According to sources, trouble started when some cultists tried to avenge the death of a fallen member that was allegedly shot dead by an OPC member. It was gathered that the cultists, in their large number went all out in search of the OPC, however, they were no where to be found as the OPC member went into hiding.
However, the OPC members summoned courage and came out from their hiding place, leading to shoot out and chaos in the neighborhood.
Residents of the area, it was gathered, locked their doors and windows in order not to be caught in the web of violence that was brewing and at that point already escalated.
Confirming the incident to journalists, the Chairman of Owo Local Government, Mr Olabade Adegbegi, said that the incident occurred on Tuesday. He however, said that the matter has died down and that business activities is gradually coming back to the area.
He issued a strong warning to the warring cult group, saying that, “the local government will deal with them severely should they in any way cause havoc.”
