Sunday Igboho; Police warn trouble makers; arrest suspected hoodlums that attack herdsmen

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed attacks on herdsmen’s’ settlements in Ogun State, in the last few days, especially in Yewa part of the State.

The Command Police Public Relations Officer DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi in a statement lamented that the affected settlements have long been in existence in the area for over 20 years, and mostly lived by Fulani herdsmens from Nigeria.

Oyeyemi said many of these herdsmen are said to have been born and bred in the area and fluent in yoruba language which makes them qualified to be called fellow Yorubas!

The PPRO stated that such attacks are therefore, considered unlawful and absolutely unconstitutional to deny citizens of Nigeria the right to cohabit in any part of the country and partake in legalized business, cattle rearing inclusive. Nevertheless, it is pertinent to orientate the herdsmen against the destruction of farmlands, which has been identified as the reason behind their unending disharmony and clashes with farmers and people in the communities.

The Command urges both farmers and herdsmen, and the entire Yoruba and Fulani communities in Yewa and across the State, to work together to stop criminals especially herdsmen visiting from other states and neighboring countries to create tension amongst them, thus sabotaging their long and cherished history of peaceful living.

Oyeyemi said at a meeting organized for stakeholders on Thursday 4th February, 2021, held at the palace of Alaye of Ayetoro, attended by representatives of the Fulani and Yoruba communities, and heads of all the security agencies including the Army and the DSS, unruly destruction of farmlands by cattle, kidnapping and raping of women as well as retaliation attacks on Fulani settlements were unanimously condemned as criminal and unacceptable, irrespective of the status, tribe or nationality of the perpetrators.

The Command also disclosed that some arrests have been made in connection with the recent incidents, and will make them scapegoats to serve as a deterrent for others to learn from.

The command confirm that Kingpins, procurers and counsellors of these hoodlums will also be made to face the law.
