Three kidnappers attempting to pick ransom arrested after gun battle with Police

Ogun State Police has arrested three members of a kidnap syndicate who abducted two residents of Abeokuta.

Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the abduction of the two residents was reported at the Sabo Ilupeju divisional headquarters.

The suspects arrested were identified as Abubakar Sodiq, 26, Ibrahim Kuaki, 24 and Muhammadu Dio, 22.

Oyeyemi said the abductees were kidnapped by gunmen while going to work at Abule Oba Alamala along Ayetoro road in Abeokuta.

The Police spokesperson said the DPO of Sabo Ilupeju division with the joint effort of the Nigerian Army and the So-Safe Corps embarked on aggressive bush combing in search of the victims and the suspects.

He said while security operatives were combing the area, the suspects had contacted the families of the victims and asked them to bring an amount of money to them somewhere in the area.

“With the information, the operatives swiftly moved to the area and laid ambush for the hoodlums. Not quite long, the hoodlums appeared to collect the ransom and the operatives engaged them in a gun duel,” he said.

He revealed that as the gunmen were about to be overpowered in the gun duel, they fled but were chased by the operatives, leading to the arrest of three of them.

He explained that other members of the gang escaped with gunshot injuries, saying “this made them abandon their victims, who were rescued unhurt and reunited with their families.”

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the anti-kidnapping unit of state CIID, stating that the escaped members of the gang will be hunted and brought to justice.
