Two people killed several others injured as suspected armed men invade market

Unknown gunmen, on Wednesday, invaded Afor Awo Market in the Awo Omamma Community of Oru East Local Government Area in Imo State.

CRIMECHANNELS gathered that at least 2 persons died in the incident, while 6 more sustained various degrees of gunshot wounds.

Also, it was gathered that several others sustained injuries from the stampede that occurred in the market. The gunmen, armed with AK-47, reportedly shot sporadically at the crowd in a bid to cause fear in the heart of the traders.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident forced traders to abandon their goods, as they ran out in large numbers, far away from the mayhem at the market area, while residents of the adjourning villages hurriedly locked their homes and shops.


After the attack, it was learnt that a 5 years old boy was found dead while a man who owned a motorcycle spare parts in the market identified as Emeka, died, late Wednesday night, in a hospital where he was taken after receiving gunshots.

Meanwhile, according to some traders and villagers, who spoke to newsmen, the invasion by the gunmen was because one of their gang member carted away huge sum of money which was gotten from the release of a kidnapped victim.

A woman, identified as Ijeoma, explaining in details what transpired, said, “the hoodlums numbering about 3, had gone on a kidnap operation early this year but one of them popularly known as Orjiwuagu from Umuifa, Ubachima Awo Omamma, ran away with the ransom said to be in millions.”

“He was said to have used part of the money to buy a Lexus car, commenced building his house and living large within the village.”

“His gang members traced him to the village but he drove towards Afor Awo market where thousands of traders were trading.”

“On sighting them, he was said to have stopped at the market as his gang members gave him a chase. But he decided to run into the market for protection after he suffered bullet wounds.”

“The most painful death that I have ever seen so far was that of that little boy of five years. He was the only son of his father, “Ijeoma added.

When contacted, the Spokesman of Imo Police Command, Orlando Ikeokwu, said that he will comment on the incident as soon as he get more information on it.
